A little about us:
We strive to give rescued pet rats and pet rat owner surrenders a Second Chance at a new beginning. We are a small home based rescue located in Simi Valley California 93063, Ventura County Area. As much as we created the Rescue for locals, our rescue rats are available to be adopted to any location. We currently are not a 501(c)3 but one day we have hopes of making our Rescue one. We are a closed rescue, which means we do not allow adopters to come to our home. We only meet at Unleashed by Petco off of Tapo Canyon Rd. EXIT in Simi Valley, a public place, when adopting out our rescues. This is to ensure safety of not only us and the rats, but you the adopter as well. We DO own rats who are our pets only. We love them and enjoy educating people on the needs and care for pet rats. You are ALWAYS welcomed to contact us via SCRR's Facebook message if you have any questions or concerns regarding our Rescue.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO READ THE TERMS AND POLICIES BELOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING RATS FROM US.
2018 ADOPTION TERMS, POLICIES AND ADOPTION APPLICATION FOR Second Chance Rat Rescue (SCRR):
You must completely read through our terms and policies and agree. Then continue to fill out the adoption application, (link posted below) contact us to confirm and have an interview with one of our partners from Second Chance Rat Rescue before adopting our rescues.
Adopting our Rescues:
If you are adopting our rats, then the rats must be pets soley for you. You may not adopt rats from us just to sell them to another person, business or association behind our Rescue. We are only adopting out PETS, which means none of our rats are available as breeders. We have a strict "no breeding" policy!
Adoption Policy:
We have the right to refuse service to anyone. If we find out any false information was given, we will blacklist you from our Rescue. We are able to void the application process at any time without warning. We kindly ask you to give us true information and not withhold any information, even if you are worried it will affect you from adopting with us.
Breeding Policy:
We have a strict NO BREEDING policy. If we confirm that you have bred our Rescue rats, we will confiscate them from you and/or take legal action if needed! We will also put you on our personal DO NOT ADOPT (DNA) - blacklist - LIST. Your information will also be sent out to other rescues, shelters and other animal associations. We do not tolerate breeding at all. Be aware, this is the one and only warning. ABSOLUTELY NO BREEDING.
Adoption Requirements:
We ask you research and have some knowledge prior to adopting our rescues. It is important to do this before taking any new pet home. You can look up what is the best housing, food, bedding, proper quarantines and introductions (if you have current rats), what type of illnesses and diseases they are prone to have, what you can and can't do with/ for them and what vet you will be taking them to in case of emergencies. Knowing these will make you a better rat parent and allow you be educated and ready for when the time comes. You can do this by Following Rat Groups on Facebook, Google or YouTube. We can send you links of Rattie Facebook Groups upon request. When asked for proof upon request of a particular thing pertaining to the rats you must provide us with it (i.e. your current rat, housing and anything else we may ask for..) If you do not give this to us, we will void furthering the application process. We have an adoption application form at the end of our terms and policy, once you have read and agreed you may go ahead and fill it out if you are still interested in adopting rats from Second Chance Rat Rescue. Prior to adopting our rats you must agree to update us via Facebook message, email or text to send us photos and let us know how the rats are doing. This is mandatory as it allows us to continue to update the previous owners when requested, also helps us know that the rescues are safe and being taken care of. We always follow up on our rescues as we feel its the right thing to do. In addition, we love knowing that they got that real Second Chance they deserved! We have a contract that must be agreed to and signed before adopting any of our rescues.
Care Terms:
You must have a job and be able to provide for your rats. If a minor, your parents must provide for your rats. You must take care of the rats you adopt from us to the best of your ability. You must always do what is right for them. They must be treated in the best ways possible, including and not limited to: the housing, food, bedding, health and basic required needs for pet rats.
Available for Adoption:
Available rescues will be featured on our Rescue page "posts" section. We will adopt rats out only when we feel they are ready for their new homes. All rescues must go with the rats they were bonded with when they came in. Mandatory that the rescues be adopted out in pairs, NO EXCEPTIONS (unless noted otherwise - i.e. singleton due to rat aggression or you already currently own other pet rats, etc.) We will also have waitlists from time to time.
Prices:
-$10 single pet rat.
-$15 a pair.
-$5 *each* additional rat.
Varieties:
We can vary all types of rats. No certain rat is guaranteed to come into our Rescue. We have dumbos, standards, rex coats and all different types and colors of ratties who come in. If you have a preference and are very particular in the type of pet rats you want to adopt be prepared to be put on a waitlist.. Again, as we can't guarantee what type of ratties will come into our Rescue.
Homechecks:
Homechecks may be required if we feel that it is necessary. If you do not allow it when requested, we have the right to refuse service to you and you will not be able to adopt from Second Chance Rat Rescue. Please understand we truly care about the safety, well-being and placing of our Rescue Rats.
Same Sex Pairs:
All rats are only to be adopted out in same sex pairs. If you are getting a single rat, you must have the same sex pair at home. Only exception is if you have a neutered or spayed rat of the opposite sex. You must adopt two rats of the same sex at the same time in order to adopt from us. Rats are very social animals and no amount of time given from a human would suffice. Only exception is if you already have another rat at home (proof required.)
Deposit Policy to Reserve your Rescues:
For reserving rescues, we require the full adoption fee amount (non-refundable.) There are NO refunds. All deposits are non-refundable, only exception is if you came, did the meet and greet and they did not fit for your family. The deposit guarantees and holds the rescues of your choice. We only require adoption fee reserves now beforehand if you are wanting us to hold the rescues of your choice because of the high amount of possible adopters recently who have not shown up after holding rescues for them for long periods of time. It is literally a loss for both the rats and the families involved, who are able to give them a great home the same exact day. We don't want any of our rescues to lose out on getting their Second Chances! If you still feel that you really want specific rescues who are available for adoption and you are not able to take them for a few days, then you can go ahead and ask us about reserving them. All deposits will be payed via PayPal.
Reserved Rats:
Once you have payed the deposit we will reserve your rats by updating the post to "Pre Adopted". We send you a screenshot confirmation of the adoption reservation payment that was done through PayPal for your security. Once your rats are reserved we can set up the day and time for your meet and greet. We are only able to hold your choice of rescues up to a 2 day time frame period (You must ask for this and give us a message explaining why you need the extra time. Once the 2 days have been up and you do not contact us or show, know that we will not be extending the time frame any farther and your deposit will be revoked.) Regardless, you will only have one more additional day to come and meet them. You only have those 3 days maximum to pick up your reserved rescues or you will lose your deposit and the rats will be put back up for adoption to find their new home. The reason we do not refund is because by not showing up you make the rescues lose an opportunity of finding a great new home and that isn't fair for them at all. We do reservations because we understand that people need some time due to work and other reasons. If you know something will come up and you are not ready for a pet, please do not contact us to adopt. It isn't fair for the rats, the rescue or yourself. Hence, why you lose your reservation deposit. The only exception to why you would get your deposit back is if you did come, did the meet and greet and those particular rescues did not fit you and your family. Also, on a positive note if all went well when you met them, you would get to take them home the same day as you had already technically "payed" the adoption fee.
Adoption Meet and Greet Dates and Time:
We are open to adopting out our rescues on any day of the week. The time may be certain as we will have to use appropriate times, daytime mandatory. All meet and greets will be done at a specific public place (mentioned above).
Day of Adoption - Location and Requirements:
As stated above, we are a closed rescue. Reason being, we are a small home-based rescue. We will meet in a public place when you are ready to meet the rescues. This ensures the safety of the coordinators, adopters and rescues. We do NOT deliver. Upon arrival for adopting you must have your OWN carrier as we do not supply. This ensures a safe ride for your new rats on their way to their new home and also would be a great travel carrier or form of transportation in case of vet visits or outings. We wait 15 minutes and if you do not attempt to contact us, we will consider you a no show and your deposit will be revoked.
Quarantine terms - (for those who have other rats currently in the home):
You must quarantine your new rats in a separate air space (i.e. another room or friends home) before putting your rats together. This must be done for a minimum of 21 days from the adoption date. This ensures health for both the new rats and your current ones. If you decide to bring new rats into your mischief in the future, you must always remember to do the same. This will help keep everyone healthy and safe.
Introduction Terms - (for those who have other rats currently in the home):
You must make sure you have completed the 21 days of quarantine before introducing a new rat and current rat to each other. Once that has been done, you can start introductions. This includes: meeting on neutral grounds, slowly do a few meetings a day and daily for as long as it may take (2 weeks minimum), placing cages next to each other but not too close so they can get use to each others scent and more. We can further discuss more on intros once you have your new rat in your home and they have completed 19 days of quarantine so you can prepare for the next two days. There are also a lot of YouTube tutorials on proper introductions if you would like to learn more in the meantime.
Advice, Concerns or Questions:
You are always more than welcomed to contact us when you have any questions or concerns. We are always happy to help out and give advice of the knowledge and experience we have gained from owning personal pet rats and through rescuing. We will even give information to anyone just curious about pet rats, you do not have to own a rat or adopt to ask for information. However, we do NOT give out medical advice, so please take your rats straight to the vet in the case of an emergency! We are not responsible if you do not take proper actions for your pets when they need it. Links will be added shortly to recommended vets in our area:
Animal Hospital Of Thousand Oaks located in Thousand Oaks, CA. (#1 RECOMMENDED!)
Rehoming Terms:
We ask you to contact us first before rehoming or bringing your rats to the shelter or another rescue in any due case you can no longer provide or care for them. You are always welcomed to bring them back to us. We would rather know the safety and whereabouts of our rescues at all times. Any transferring must be known to Second Chance Rat Rescue, this is mandatory.
Exchange Policy:
We guarantee our rats health once they leave our rescue. We do not adopt out sick or injured rats. We will only adopt once we know they are ready for their new homes. We will disclaim any issues upfront before adoptions and if you agree and adopt, we are no longer responsible for the vet bills and/ or care of the rescues, it will be completely your responsibility as their new owner. We do not refund adoption fees. We will however exchange your rat(s) for others within 2 days of adoption date if he/she gets sick or injured (by a legitamite reason and only if you have a vet note confirmed as to what happened - Vet contact information must be provided so we can confirm) in order for you to exchange. We are not liable for any vet bills, that is your responsibility once the rescues leave our care.
Return Policy:
You are more than welcomed to return our rescues back to us if needed. In the future, if you can no longer care for your rats regardless of their age we will take them back. We will not pay for any fees, but will gladly take them in. We want to make sure we know where our rats are at all times and we only want what is best for them. The return policy does not pertain to returning your rats right after adopting them - be aware that there is no refund on the adoption fee - but we will always take back our rescues if you have something come up in your life and there is a situation where you can no longer care for your rats.
Contract Policy:
Once you have understood and agreed to all our terms and policies you will need to fill out our adoption application. If you are unsure about something, feel free to contact us so we can help explain it furthermore. Only agree if you completely and fully understand our terms and conditions. When all are completed you will be contacted by one of our partners from Second Chance Rat Rescue. After we have spoke and we have decided everything is understood, completed and confirmed, then we will continue the adoption process. As long as nothing comes up in between, you will be given a date to meet your rescues. On arrival to adopt your rats you will sign a contract. The contract will include: that you understood all our terms and policies, which specific rescue rats you are taking home, along with a statement saying you are agreeing to take care of the rats to the best of your ability and then a signature to complete the adoption. *Please be sure you have a printed copy of the adoption contract before coming to pick up your rats.
